About Castle Garden (Burggarten Salzwedel)
The castle was the starting point of Salzwedel. It probably arose to protect a trade route between Magdeburg and Lüneburg at a ford of the Jeetze River. The town is mentioned for the first time in 1112, when Emperor Henry V besieged it, and in 1134 it came under the control of Albert the Bear, of the family that would found the Margraviate of Brandenburg.
Of the castle, which formed a ring about 220 metres in diameter, the round tower (Bergfried) probably from the late 12th century remains, along with sections of the wall, the moat and remains of the chapel of St. Anne. The tower is about 24 metres high, with a high entrance 12 metres above ground and walls more than three and a half metres thick at the base. an 18th-century residential building was demolished in 1899.
Today the area is the Burggarten, the castle garden, a green space in the middle of the town, next to the Burgstraße, the pedestrian street with shops and cafés. It is a good place for a break between the churches and the museum.
