About Neuer Garten

The Neuer Garten, “New Garden”, was created from 1787 by Frederick William II, nephew and successor of Frederick the Great. He wanted a park different from his uncle’s baroque Sanssouci, and the result was a landscaped garden of about 100 hectares, with lawns, woodlands and trails along the shores of the Heiliger See and Jungfernsee lakes in northern Potsdam.

On the shore of the Heiliger See stands the Marmorpalais, the Marble Palace, a summer residence of the king built between 1787 and 1793 and faced with Silesian marble. It is one of the earliest examples of Neoclassicism in Prussia. The park also contains a pyramid that served as an ice house, an orangery and small houses in the Dutch style.

On the park’s northern side is Schloss Cecilienhof, built between 1913 and 1917 in an English country-house style for Crown Prince Wilhelm and Princess Cecilie. It was the last palace erected by the Hohenzollerns. In July and August 1945 it hosted the Potsdam Conference, where Truman, Stalin and Churchill (later replaced by Attlee) discussed the future of defeated Germany. The palace interior is undergoing restoration for an indefinite period: check before you go whether visits have resumed. The façade and courtyard can be seen from the park.

The park is open daily from early morning until dusk, and entry is free. It’s popular with locals for walking and, in summer, for cooling off on the lake shores.
