How to get there

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

From Springbok, the arrival town, it’s about 65 km along the N7, roughly a 45-minute drive. From Cape Town it’s about 495 km via the N7. Long-distance buses run along the N7, but do not go into the park.

How many days

One day for the Skilpad area of Namaqua National Park, doing the driving circuit and short walks. Those with a 4x4 can stay an extra day and continue to the park’s coast.

When to go

The flower season usually runs from August to September, depending on rainfall. The Skilpad area, in the mountains, receives more moisture from the Atlantic and often blooms even in drier years. Outside the season, the place is very quiet.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Yes. The park is about 22 km from the village on a dirt road, and there is no public transport. The Skilpad area accepts ordinary cars; the rest of the park requires a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4.

  1. Morning
    Road to Skilpad

    Leave Kamieskroon in the late morning, when the flowers begin to open, and stop at the fields along the road to the park.

  2. Afternoon
    Skilpad

    Do the driving circuit in the Skilpad area and the Skilpad trail, about 5 km, through the flower fields.

  3. Late afternoon
    Korhaan Trail

    Do the Korhaan trail, about 3 km, with a greater variety of species.

  4. Evening
    Kamieskroon

    Return to the village and have dinner; nights tend to be cold in season.
