About Pamukkale Travertenleri

The travertines of Pamukkale occupy the slope below Hierapolis. Mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate and forms bright edges and surfaces, which gave the place its name associated with a cotton castle. The landscape is natural, but visitor circulation is organized to preserve it.

Not all terraces receive water at the same time, and the blue pools seen in photographs do not represent a permanent condition across the whole slope. The walk should be done in the released sectors, removing shoes where indicated and avoiding areas closed for conservation.

Choose the gate and the route before entering, because the approach from the base involves an ascent. Allow time for Hierapolis as well, rather than reducing the complex to a photograph of the terraces. On hot days, bring water and schedule exposed walks for a cooler period.
