Kayseri – Kayseri Destination Cappadocia Capital

How to get there

  • Kayseri Havalimanı (ASR) Kayseri · 7 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Kayseri Airport (ASR) handles air arrivals, with onward road travel to the city center. If you want to visit the city before the valleys, plan transport accordingly: a direct transfer to Göreme does not include the urban circuit.

How many days

Set aside a day for the castle, the two museums and Hunat Hatun; an overnight stay helps separate this visit from the flight arrival and the transfer to lodging in the Cappadocia valleys.

When to go

In Kayseri, May, June, September and October generally favor walking between central monuments. July and August require breaks for the heat; from December to March, the cold and short days make it useful to balance outdoor streets with museums.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

The area around the castle, Hunat Hatun and the Gevher Nesibe museum can be combined into urban walks. Taxis or public transport help link to your accommodation; for the valleys, book a separate road transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth spending a day in Kayseri before heading to Cappadocia?

The city centre has its own heritage itinerary, with the castle, the Museum of Seljuk Civilizations and the Hunat Hatun complex. An overnight stay lets you visit these places without squeezing them between arrival and the transfer to the valleys.

What to see in Kayseri without leaving the city centre?

The stone fortification sits beside Cumhuriyet Square, with Hunat Hatun in the same urban sector. The museum housed in the former Gevher Nesibe medical complex completes the Seljuk history walk.

Does Kayseri replace Göreme as a base for the valleys?

The city offers urban heritage and air access, but is distant from the most visited valleys. For several days of churches and rock hikes, basing yourself in a place like Göreme reduces road transfers.

What are the typical foods to eat in Kayseri?

Mantı, small dumplings, and pastırma, cured and spiced meat, are part of the local cuisine. Include a meal during the city-centre visit rather than spending the whole day solely on the airport transfer.
