From Göreme or Nevşehir, follow the road to the Derinkuyu center. Tours and hired transport allow you to continue to other parts of southern Cappadocia.

When to go

Derinkuyu can be visited in different seasons because the main circuit is underground. To pair the visit with the valleys, consider April to June or September to October; from December to March, plan the roads according to the cold.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

The entrance is at the Derinkuyu center. A car or organized tour serves the regional stretch; the underground visit is done on foot.

Those interested in the organization of the underground can compare the two. On a short trip, choosing only one leaves time for churches, villages and valleys, avoiding concentrating the itinerary in enclosed spaces.

Do I need to overnight in Derinkuyu to see the underground city?

The visit is usually part of a road circuit that departs from Cappadocia bases. Overnighting is not a condition for descending to the site; organize your return to your accommodation.

Does Derinkuyu fit with a visit to the Ihlara Valley?

It can be part of a southern circuit, provided there is time for the road and for a proper walk in the canyon. The descent underground already requires effort in narrow passages.

Is it a good idea to go to Derinkuyu if I don't like tunnels?

The main reason to stop involves corridors and rooms beneath the ground, some low. If that environment doesn't work for you, choose an above-ground excursion and avoid booking the visit just to fulfill an itinerary.
