Get to know the place

A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Vysočina covers highlands between Bohemia and Moravia. The trip can be organized around Telč, Třebíč and Žďár nad Sázavou, three towns with World Heritage ensembles. They offer different experiences and work better as stages of a route than as a rush to see monuments all in one day.

Telč brings together arcaded houses, lakes and a Renaissance castle. Třebíč lets you explore the Jewish quarter, the cemetery and the Basilica of St. Procopius. In Žďár nad Sázavou, the pilgrimage church of Zelená hora shifts the visit’s scale to a geometric ensemble on a hill.

Regional travel requires attention to train and bus connections. A car makes linking the three towns easier, but is not necessary to visit their historic cores.

This destination brings together 3 cities: Telč, Třebíč, Žďár nad Sázavou.

Things to do in Vysočina

Zachariáš of Hradec Square
Telč · Vysočina · Historic center

Zachariáš of Hradec Square

Zachariáš of Hradec Square forms the centre of Telč. Houses with arcades and differing gables line an elongated space, where the façades’ design invites a walk from end to end. The historic ensemble also includes the town’s relationship with the surrounding lakes.

Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora

The pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk occupies the Zelená hora hill in Žďár nad Sázavou. Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel’s design uses geometric forms to create a church and surrounding precinct. Its elevated position allows the exterior design to be perceived before entering.

Jewish Quarter and Jewish Cemetery
Třebíč · Vysočina · Historic complex

Jewish Quarter and Jewish Cemetery

Třebíč’s Jewish quarter stretches between the Jihlava river and the hillside, with narrow streets and passages between houses. The heritage ensemble includes the cemetery in a higher position. It is an urban walk that requires observing the layout and the relationships between spaces, as well as the façades.

Basilica of St. Procopius
Třebíč · Vysočina · Church

Basilica of St. Procopius

The Basilica of Saint Procopius is located in the former monastic complex of Třebíč, above the bank of the Jihlava. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic forms. The building is part of the World Heritage along with the Jewish quarter and the cemetery, although the visit has a different history and organisation.

Telč Castle

The Telč castle closes one end of the historic core. The residence includes courtyards, halls and garden areas, directly connected to the square of arcaded houses. The walk lets you move from urban architecture into the rooms of a manor house.

Frequently asked questions about Vysočina

Do the three Vysočina towns fit into one day?

That is not a good distribution for seeing the interiors. Allow at least three days for the centres and the transfers.

It makes connections between the three bases easier. Without a car, check regional timetables before deciding where to stay.

What is the difference between Telč and Třebíč?

Telč centers on the square, arcades and castle; Třebíč has a Jewish quarter with narrow streets and a medieval basilica.

Is Zelená hora in the centre of Žďár?

The church sits on a hill, outside the central core. Add the urban transfer and the walk to your visit time.
