About Museu do Traje
The Museu do Traje is located on Praça da República, in a 20th-century building that once belonged to Banco de Portugal. It is devoted to the traditional clothing of the Viana do Castelo region and Alto Minho, which remain alive at festivals, especially the romaria da Senhora da Agonia in August.
The collection displays work clothes, festive outfits, Sunday attire and wedding garments. The best-known is the traje à vianesa, with the skirt, apron and embroidered waistcoat in strong colours, the headscarf and the gold pieces worn on the chest. The black bridal costume is one of the highlights.
The museum also shows filigree gold — the traditional jewellery of the Minho, such as the corações de Viana and the arrecadas — and explains how linen and wool fabrics were produced, from the plant to the loom.
For visitors who come outside August, it’s a good way to understand the parades and the mordomas of the romaria.
