About Penha
The Penha is a mountain south of Guimarães, covered in woodland, large granite rocks and small caves. It is a place for walks and devotion for the city's residents.
At the top is the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Penha, built in the 20th century in granite, with a pilgrimage that usually takes place in September.
Trails and paths link the sanctuary to viewpoints, caves and picnic areas. From the summit, the view encompasses Guimarães, the valley and the Minho hills.
A cable car connects the lower part of the city to the top of the Penha, and a road also climbs to the sanctuary. On the cable car ascent, the view opens up over Guimarães and the surrounding valleys.
