About Paço dos Duques de Bragança

The Paço dos Duques de Bragança was built in the early 15th century for D. Afonso, the illegitimate son of King D. João I and the first Duke of Bragança. The style recalls northern European palaces, with steep roofs and many brick chimneys.

The palace was abandoned when the family moved to Vila Viçosa in the Alentejo and remained in ruins for centuries. It was rebuilt between 1937 and 1959 and served as the official residence of the President of the Republic in the north.

The halls display Flemish tapestries, furniture, paintings, ceramics and arms from the 16th to 18th centuries. The banqueting hall has a wooden ceiling shaped like an inverted ship's hull.

The palace sits on the hilltop of the historic center, between the castle and Rua de Santa Maria.
