About Santuário do Sameiro

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Sameiro sits on the summit of Monte do Sameiro, at about 570 metres altitude, near Bom Jesus. Construction began in 1863 at the initiative of a priest from Braga, and the temple was completed in the 20th century.

It is one of the largest Marian sanctuaries in Portugal and receives large pilgrimages, especially in June and August.

In front of the church, a wide staircase leads to a monument with a column and the image of the Immaculate Conception.

From the top of the staircase and from the dome you can see Braga, the Minho valleys and, on clear days, the sea. Next to the sanctuary there are picnic areas and a small square with cafés, popular at weekends.
