About Palácio do Raio
The Palácio do Raio was built in the mid-18th century for a wealthy Braga merchant, with the design attributed to architect André Soares, one of the leading figures of the Baroque in the Minho region.
The façade is covered in blue azulejos, with windows and doors framed by worked stone in flowing curves, an example of Bracarense rococo.
The name comes from the Visconde do Raio, who bought the palace in the 19th century. Later the building passed to the Misericórdia de Braga.
Today it houses an interpretive centre about the history of the Misericórdia and the adjacent São Marcos hospital. The interior staircase is also decorated.
