About Mosteiro de Tibães
From there came guidance for Benedictine monasteries on both sides of the Atlantic.
The church, rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, features gilded altarpieces and pulpits regarded as examples of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo, with work by André Soares.
After the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834, the monastery was sold and fell into ruin. The state began restoring it from 1986, and today it is a monument open to visitors.
The monastery grounds include gardens, a kitchen garden, a pond, woodland and an escadório with fountains that climbs the hillside.
