About Diocesan Museum of Jesuit Art of Santa María de Fe
Santa María de Fe was founded as a Jesuit reducción in 1647. From the mission period the town retains the layout around the plaza and one of the old indigenous houses, a building with low galleries and thick wooden pillars next to the church.
That house is home to the Diocesan Museum of Jesuit Arts, opened on September 8, 1981 by the Fundación Paracuaria after extensive restoration work. There are about 56 Baroque images that were part of the main altar of the former temple, arranged in themed rooms, with emphasis on the Nativity group and the Passion room.
The parish church, next door, preserves the image of Santa María de Fe and wooden angels. In front is Plaza Mariscal Estigarribia, tree-lined, where a group of monkeys usually lives in the trees and also moves through the museum courtyard.
The French naturalist Aimé Bonpland lived in Santa María de Fe in the early 19th century, confined in Paraguay until 1831. The village is 241 km from Asunción, on an 11 km paved detour that leaves PY01 at San Ignacio Guazú.
