About Cathedral of San Juan Bautista

The cathedral is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the town’s patron saint, and is the seat of the diocese of San Juan Bautista de las Misiones, created on January 19, 1957. The parish predates the diocese and dates from the late 19th century, when the settlement of the old posta began to be called San Juan Bautista.

The temple stands in front of Plaza Mariscal Estigarribia, the central square. On one corner, old houses retain columned galleries that shade the sidewalks, one of the best-known images of the center.

It is in the cathedral that the town celebrates its most important dates: the mass for the municipality’s anniversary on January 26, and the patron feast on June 24. In the plaza in front the festival launch for the batiburrillo and an entrepreneurs’ fair take place during the festival.

A few blocks away, Plaza Boquerón, with a fountain and a commemorative pyramid, is the festival’s stage, bringing together typical foods and music for two nights.
