About Casa de Mangoré
Agustín Pío Barrios, known as Mangoré, is the most remembered name of Paraguayan classical guitar. The most accepted account says he was born in San Juan Bautista on May 5, 1885, son of Doroteo Barrios and Martina Ferreira, in a large family in which several siblings played instruments.
The childhood house is in the central area of the town, known as the manzana cultural. According to the person in charge, it was there that Barrios was born and learned to play; other sources say he lived in the house until age 13. In 1960 the building functioned as a small school. In 1994 it was purchased and restored by visual artist Gill Alegre, who opened it to visitors.
The old walls and exhibited objects recall the family’s life and the time when the boy began in music. Barrios left Paraguay to perform across much of South America, Central America and Europe, composed works such as La catedral, Danza paraguaya and El gran trémolo, and died in San Salvador, El Salvador, in 1944.
Other places in town bear his name, such as the Agustín Barrios theater, and a three-meter statue greets those arriving in San Juan Bautista by road.
