About Xalapa Museum of Anthropology
The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa is located in the northern part of the city and belongs to the Universidad Veracruzana. The building, inaugurated in 1986, descends a hillside in galleries and courtyards connected by ramps, with tropical gardens between them.
The collection brings together pieces from the three major pre-Hispanic cultures of the present-day state of Veracruz. From the Olmecs, the oldest civilization in Mesoamerica, there are stone colossal heads, altars and figures, including San Lorenzo Head Number 1, one of the largest known. From the central Veracruz culture there are smiling ceramic figures and sculptures associated with the ballgame. From the Huastecs in the north there are stone sculptures of deities.
The route follows a chronological and geographical order, and many sculptures are displayed in the gardens, outdoors. The museum is considered the second most important archaeology museum in Mexico, after the National Museum in the capital.
There are texts in Spanish and some in English, and guides can be hired at the entrance.
