About El Tajín Archaeological Zone
El Tajín is about 10 km from Papantla, in a valley of hills covered with tropical vegetation. It was one of the largest cities on the Gulf coast, peaking between AD 800 and 1200, and the capital of a culture in central Veracruz linked to the ancestors of the Totonacs. The name, in Totonac, refers to thunder. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
The best-known construction is the Pyramid of the Niches, with six levels and 365 square niches on the facades, which relate to the days of the year. The niches create a play of light and shadow that changes throughout the day, and in the past they were painted red and blue.
El Tajín has about 20 ballgame courts, more than any other known city in Mesoamerica. On the South ballcourt, stone reliefs show ceremonies linked to the game, including a sacrifice. On the high ground, Tajín Chico gathers the rulers' palaces.
At the entrance there is a museum with sculptures from the site, and the flyers perform on a pole beside it.
