Frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying in Puerto Aventuras instead of Playa del Carmen?

For those who prefer a quieter place, yes. Puerto Aventuras is in the middle of the Riviera Maya, about 20 km from Playa del Carmen and 40 km from Tulum, close to cenotes, Akumal and Xpu-Ha beach. Nightlife and shopping are much smaller than in Playa del Carmen.

Do you need a car to get to the cenotes near Puerto Aventuras?

No. The Cristalino, Jardín del Edén and Azul cenotes are next to highway 307, around kilometer 266, and the shared vans that link Playa del Carmen to Tulum stop near the entrances. A car makes it easier to combine the cenotes with Akumal or Tulum on the same day.

Can you visit all three cenotes in the same day?

Yes. Cristalino, Jardín del Edén and Azul are a few minutes from each other. Each charges a separate entrance fee, and many people choose two to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Check the current rates and opening days before you go.

Can you use sunscreen in the cenotes?

Generally, no: the cenotes in the region usually prohibit common sunscreen and insect repellent in the water, to avoid contaminating the underground rivers. Bring a sun-protection shirt and rinse off in the entrance shower before swimming, when available.

What is the distance from Puerto Aventuras to Cancún airport?

About 75 km via highway 307. The trip usually takes just over an hour, depending on traffic leaving Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
