About Lagoon of Mexcaltitán
The island of Mexcaltitán sits in the middle of a lagoon on the northern coast of Nayarit. The water around it is part of the Marismas Nacionales Nayarit Biosphere Reserve, declared in 2010, a network of brackish lagoons, mangroves, wetlands and estuaries along the coast.
The approach to the island is a trip in itself: boats depart from the La Batanga landing and take about 15 minutes through the mangroves. On the island, boatmen offer longer tours of the lagoon, with stops at fishing spots and along the mangrove edges.
Herons and other waterbirds often appear in the mangroves, especially at dawn and dusk. Shrimp fishing, with nets and small boats, is part of the island’s landscape and economy.
In the rainy season, from June to October, water levels rise and, in some years, flood the island’s streets, which are then traversed by canoe.
