About Misión de San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó
The mission of San Javier was founded in 1699, and the current stone church was built between 1744 and 1758, in a valley of the La Giganta mountain range, about 35 km from Loreto. Due to its preservation, it is considered one of the most beautiful missions of Baja California.
The church has a carved stone façade, a dome and a tower, and inside there are gilded altarpieces brought from Mexico City in the 18th century. Behind the church, an olive tree planted by the Jesuits is over 300 years old.
The road from Loreto climbs the mountains along a winding road, with viewpoints and rock paintings near the route. The village around it is small, with gardens irrigated by old channels.
On December 3rd, the festival of San Javier gathers pilgrims from the whole region.
