La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, on the shore of a bay of the Gulf of California, the sea that oceanographer Jacques Cousteau called the world’s aquarium. It has a peaceful malecón, turquoise-water beaches and is the base for visiting Espíritu Santo Island, with sea lions and deserted beaches, part of the islands and protected areas of the Gulf of California, a World Heritage site.

In the bay of La Paz, between autumn and spring, whale sharks— the largest fish in the world—are often present; they feed near the coast and can be seen on tours that follow protection rules. Balandra beach, a few kilometers from the city, is a shallow cove between hills, featuring a mushroom-shaped rock.

About 350 km to the north, Loreto was the first capital of the Californias, founded in 1697 around the mission of Nuestra Señora de Loreto. The town is small and sits opposite the Bahía de Loreto National Park, with islands, dolphins and, in winter, blue whales. In the mountains, the mission of San Javier is one of the best preserved on the peninsula.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From October to May the climate is dry and mild, with calm seas most days; whale sharks tend to be in La Paz Bay from this period through spring, and blue whales appear in Loreto from January to March. From June to September it is very hot, and the coast is in the hurricane season, which lasts until November.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Four days allow you to see La Paz, Espíritu Santo Island and Balandra. For Loreto add two or three days, either by driving the peninsula road or by plane.

Which city to stay in

In La Paz, the downtown and malecón concentrate hotels and restaurants within walking distance of the city beach; there are larger hotels on the road to Pichilingue. In Loreto, the historic center, near the mission and the malecón, has small hotels, and Nopoló, to the south, has resorts.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
