About Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto

The mission of Nuestra Señora de Loreto was founded in 1697 by the Jesuit Juan María de Salvatierra and was the first permanent mission of the Californias, from which the peninsula missions and, later, those of Alta California in the United States set out. For this reason it is called the head and mother of the missions of the Californias.

The stone church, completed in 1744, was damaged by earthquakes and restored. The interior has a gilded altarpiece with the image of the Virgin of Loreto, brought by the founders.

Beside it, the Museum of the Jesuit Missions shows objects, paintings, weapons and documents from the period, and tells the story of the peoples of the peninsula.

The mission is in the historic center, a few blocks from the malecón, on a pedestrian street with shops and restaurants.
