About Centro de Tequila e Museo Nacional del Tequila
Tequila’s centre has the main plaza with a bandstand, the stone church of Santiago Apóstol, built in the 17th century, and streets of low houses with distilleries, shops and restaurants. The smell of cooked agave spreads through the streets near the factories.
The National Museum of Tequila, one block from the plaza, tells the story of the drink, from the first mezcal distillations in the region to the birth of the denomination of origin, with tools, stills, old bottles and photographs.
Around the plaza are the oldest distilleries, with tours that show the ovens, mills and barrels. Many cantinas serve the region’s traditional drink, served with sangrita.
In early December the National Tequila Fair fills the town with parades, music and charrería.
