About Mercado San Juan de Dios e Plaza de los Mariachis

The San Juan de Dios market, also known as Mercado Libertad, opened in 1958 in a three-story concrete building with domes and murals. It is one of the largest covered markets in Latin America.

The ground floor sells fruit, sweets, herbs and crafts; the second floor is a food court with dozens of stalls serving Jalisco specialties such as birria, pozole and torta ahogada; the third floor houses electronics and clothing.

Next to the market, Plaza de los Mariachis is the traditional spot for Guadalajara mariachi groups who play for people at the tables and are hired by song.

The market is busy and crowded; go calmly and keep your belongings safe. The plaza is livelier at night and on weekends.
