About Basílica de Zapopan
The Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is located in the center of the municipality of Zapopan, part of Greater Guadalajara. It was completed in 1730, featuring a plateresque Baroque façade, and houses the image of the Virgin of Zapopan, made of corn paste in the 16th century.
Every year, from May to October, the image visits the parishes of the region, and on October 12 it returns to the basilica in a pilgrimage that gathers more than a million people, with dancers from traditional groups, in a walk of about 8 km from Guadalajara Cathedral.
Next to the basilica there is a Huichol art museum, with embroidery, masks and colorful yarn paintings of the Wixárika people from the Jalisco and Nayarit highlands.
In front, a wide plaza and a pedestrian promenade with restaurants form Zapopan's center.
