About Malecón de Ajijic
The Ajijic malecón runs along the shore of Lake Chapala for about 1 km, with gardens, benches, sculptures and a pier that extends over the water. From the pier you can see the mountains on the south shore and, in winter, migratory birds such as white pelicans.
Lake Chapala is the largest natural lake in Mexico, about 80 km long. Fishermen’s boats still depart from the village, and there are short boat rides on the water.
From the malecón, stone streets rise up to Ajijic’s main square, with the Chapel of the Rosary, and spread through the village, where colorful murals by local artists cover walls and houses.
In the late afternoon, residents and visitors walk along the malecón to watch the sunset over the lake.
