Northern Baja California, next to the United States border, has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers, mild winters and the cool Pacific breeze. In this climate, Valle de Guadalupe became Mexico's main wine region, with wineries of all sizes, regional cuisine restaurants and lodging among vineyards and rocky hills.
About 30 km to the south, Ensenada is the region's port, with a malecón, fish market, battered fish tacos and fresh shellfish. South of the city, La Bufadora is a marine geyser that shoots water into the air when waves enter a crack in the rock. From December to April, gray whales pass along the coast on their way to the lagoons in the southern peninsula.
Tijuana, the state's largest city and one of the busiest borders in the world, is the gateway, with its own airport and connected by a pedestrian bridge to San Diego. It has Avenida Revolución, the domed cultural center and a well-known food scene that includes the creation of the Caesar salad.
