About Cenote Ik Kil

The Ik Kil cenote is about 3 km from Chichén Itzá, on the road to Valladolid, inside a park with a restaurant and gardens. It is an open and nearly perfectly round sinkhole, with rock walls of about 26 meters down to the water and roughly 60 meters in diameter.

From the rim long vines and roots descend to the surface, and small waterfalls trickle down the rocks in the rainy season. A staircase carved into the rock leads down to the bathing platform, from which you can swim in the fresh, dark, deep water with small black fish.

Because of its proximity to the ruins, it is the most common stop for tours from Cancún and Mérida, and it usually gets crowded at midday. Life jackets are mandatory.

Before entering the water a shower is requested, and regular sunscreen and insect repellent are not allowed.
