About Plaza de Armas de El Fuerte
El Fuerte’s Plaza de Armas is the town’s center, featuring an iron bandstand, trees and benches. Around it are the municipal palace, with arcades and an interior courtyard with murals, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from the 18th century, and colonial mansions that have become hotels and restaurants.
In the 19th century, El Fuerte was the capital of the state of Occidente, which grouped Sinaloa and Sonora, and the townhouses reflect the wealth of the mountain mines.
The town promotes itself as the birthplace of Zorro, a fictional character, and one of the downtown hotels capitalizes on that legend.
The streets around the square are good for walking in the late afternoon, when the heat eases.
