About Museo Mirador El Fuerte
The El Fuerte lookout museum sits atop the Pérgola hill, where the Spaniards built a fort in 1610 to protect the region from attacks by local peoples. The original fort vanished, and the current structure is a replica.
The rooms tell the history of the region, from the indigenous mayos and yoremes to the founding of the town and the mining era, with artifacts, photographs and models.
From the terrace you can see the Fuerte river, the valley and the mountains in the distance. Sunset is the most sought-after time.
The museum is a few minutes’ walk from the Plaza de Armas along streets of colonial mansions, and the climb up the hill is short. Near the riverbank there are trails used by birdwatchers.
