About Palazzo Salis
Palazzo Salis is one of the main historic palaces of the Valtellina. It originated from the renovation and merger of four noble palaces from the 16th century and still belongs to the same family, the Salis, a lineage from the Grisões that governed part of the Valtellina when the valley was under the rule of the Three Leagues. The façade dates from the late 16th century, between two towers, with a Baroque portal designed from a project by Vignola.
The visit follows a circuit of ten rooms decorated with frescoes and period furniture. The best known is the Saloncello, a vaulted room with trompe-l'œil frescoes, which hosted meetings of Valtellina's political power in the 17th and 18th centuries. The visit also includes the family's Baroque chapel from 1612, one of the first dedicated to São Carlos Borromeu.
A portico leads to the inner garden, an Italian garden of geometric beds, the best known in the Valtellina. The palace was restored over two decades and welcomes visitors year-round.
In the cellars, the family produces Valtellina wines, with tastings offered in connection with the visit.
