About Hverfjall
Hverfjall is a cone of dark volcanic material that stands out near Mývatn. Its circular outline allows the crater to be recognized from the surroundings and, on authorized trails, to view the interior depression from the rim.
The ascent feels different from walking among the lava forms of Dimmuborgir. The exposed terrain and elevated position change the perception of the landscape: the lake and nearby fields appear together, depending on visibility.
Use only the designated access routes to reach the rim and choose the length of the hike according to conditions. A full circuit is not required to understand the cone’s shape. Set aside a specific period for the ascent rather than treating it as a brief roadside stop between drives.
