About Dimmuborgir
Dimmuborgir gathers lava shapes where pillars and openings form passages at different scales. The field is near Mývatn and offers an interpretation of lava solidification that goes beyond a flat rock surface.
Marked routes vary in length. Some pass formations that resemble arches or enclosures, while others show the distribution of blocks across the landscape. Vegetation among the rocks changes the appearance over the months and helps perceive the contrast with the dark surface.
Choose the trail before leaving the visitor area and follow the signage to complete the planned route. Dimmuborgir can be combined with other Mývatn points, but deserves its own walk. It is not necessary to undertake a long crossing to see the field’s main forms.
