About Dettifoss
Dettifoss is located on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, in a canyon sector of Vatnajökull National Park. The water carries glacial sediments and descends in a wide fall, producing significant spray depending on flow volume and wind.
The scene is of exposed rock and carved banks. Viewing points depend on which side you choose for access: the roads on the banks do not serve as a short link right next to the fall. You must decide the route before starting your journey.
The visit can be organized from Reykjahlíð or as part of a larger circuit around the North. Check whether the road and paths on the intended side are open. Allow time for the walk between the parking area and the waterfall; do not rely only on road distance to estimate the visit duration.
