About Ásbyrgi

Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon in the northern sector of Vatnajökull National Park. The walls enclose an area with vegetation and walking trails, creating a landscape different from the open shores of Dettifoss.

Walking along the canyon floor allows you to view the walls from below and notice the changes between wooded areas and clearings. There are routes of varying lengths, and support points help choose a hike that fits the visitor's time and interest.

Road access can be combined with Húsavík as part of a Diamond Circle stage. Allow at least half a day for travel and visiting, and do not treat the canyon as just a roadside viewpoint. Check the condition of trails before choosing a longer route.
