About Monte Nabukelevu (Mount Washington)
Mount Nabukelevu, also called Mount Washington, is the highest point of Kadavu, at about 800 meters, and is located on the western tip of the island. It is a forest-covered volcano whose silhouette marks the landscape seen from the sea and the western bays.
The forest on the slopes shelters birds that exist only on Kadavu, such as the papagaio-de-Kadavu, with red and green colors, and the melifago-de-Kadavu, which are often seen at the forest edges and near the villages.
The climb to the summit is long and demanding, along trails in the wet forest, and must be done with a guide from the villages at the foot of the mountain, who own the land and know the route. A full day is required, with a very early start.
Those who do not want to climb can view the mountain by boat on a western coast tour, or do short forest walks near the villages.
