Kadavu lies about 100 km south of Suva and is Fiji’s fourth-largest island, long and indented, with forested mountains and deep bays. There are almost no roads: villages are connected by boat and by trails, and life follows the pace of fishing, gardens and the church. The main town, Vunisea, is small and hosts the airstrip, the port and provincial services.
The main draw is the sea. Along the east and north coasts stretches the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the largest coral barriers in the world, with walls, channels and coral heads that attract divers. Near the islands of Ono and Buliya, manta rays often visit cleaning stations on the reef.
On land, Kadavu’s forest shelters birds found only on the island, such as the Kadavu parrot and the Kadavu honeyeater, and Mount Nabukelevu, a volcano of about 800 meters at the western tip, defines the landscape. Lodgings are scattered across bays and islets, generally small and focused on diving, fishing and walking.
Kadavu is for those who want a more remote, tranquil Fiji with diving and nature. Because distances are covered by boat, each lodging acts as a base with organized trips departing from it.
This destination brings together 1 city: Vunisea.
