About TEA Tenerife Space of the Arts
The TEA, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, opened in 2008 with a design by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron, in partnership with Canary Islands architect Virgilio Gutiérrez. The building, made of dark concrete with walls pierced by irregular openings that filter the light, sits on the edge of the barranco de Santos, next to the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África.
A sloping plaza crosses the building, linking the upper street to the barranco, and serves as a public passage. Inside are exhibition rooms, a large library open to the street, a cinema and a café.
The centre houses the collection of Óscar Domínguez, a surrealist painter born in Tenerife in 1906, who lived in Paris and associated with Breton and Picasso. It also hosts contemporary art and photography exhibitions, including the collection of the Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife.
The neighbouring market, dating from 1944 and featuring colonial arches, is good for sampling Canary Islands fruits and cheeses.
