About Drago Milenario de Icod de los Vinos
The Drago Milenario is in Icod de los Vinos, a town in northwest Tenerife, about 25 km from Puerto de la Cruz. It is a dragon tree, Dracaena draco, a species typical of the Canary Islands, Madeira and Cape Verde, which does not form growth rings in the trunk, making its age difficult to determine. It has been called a thousand years old, hence the name 'Milenario'; studies indicate a few hundred years.
The tree is about 18 metres tall with a trunk of roughly 20 metres in circumference at the base, its branches spreading like an umbrella. The sap, which turns red on contact with air, was called dragon's blood and was used by the guanches and by Europeans as a medicine and as dye.
The drago stands inside the Parque del Drago, a garden of Canary plants where you can see the tree up close. It can also be viewed from above, from the square by the church of San Marcos next door.
Icod has a historic centre with Canary houses and wines from the Ycoden-Daute-Isora denomination of origin.
