About Aquarium Donostia-San Sebastián
The Aquarium of San Sebastián opened in 1928 by the Gipuzkoa Oceanography Society and is located at the end of the port, at the foot of Mount Urgull, facing the bay. It has been expanded and renovated several times and today combines a maritime museum and an aquarium.
The first section is museum-style, with ship models, navigation instruments, exhibits about Basque whale and cod fishing in the North Atlantic, and the skeleton of a North Atlantic right whale hunted in the 19th century.
The aquarium section has tanks with species from the Cantabrian Sea, tropical reef tanks, and an ocean tank with sharks, rays, and turtles. A 360-degree acrylic tunnel passes under that tank, with fish swimming above and alongside the visitor.
There is also a touch area where children can touch starfish and other animals under supervision.
