About Parque Ecológico de Plaiaundi
The Plaiaundi ecological park lies on the shore of Txingudi bay, the estuary of the Bidasoa River between Irún, Hondarribia and Hendaye. The bay was formed from a flooded glacial valley and gradually filled with sediments, creating marshes, lagoons and meadows that fill and empty with the tides.
The Plaiaundi area was restored as a park and is part of the Txingudi protected zone. It has flat paths, boardwalks and covered observation hides from which you can watch birds. The mouth of the Bidasoa is a stopping point for migratory birds between northern Europe and Africa, and herons, ducks, waders and other species are often seen, especially in autumn and winter.
The park has an interpretation center that explains the bay’s fauna and flora and organizes activities. The paths connect to the bay promenade, which continues toward Hondarribia.
It’s a peaceful walk, good for late afternoon. Bring binoculars if you have them.
