About Iglesia de Santa María del Juncal
The church of Santa María del Juncal is Irún's main church and is located in the center, a few steps from the Museu Oiasso. It was designed and built in the 16th century, during the Renaissance, but follows the Gothic construction system, still common in northern Europe at that time.
The building has a large, simple volume, with a tall tower that stands out in the center's skyline. Inside, the space is broad and unified, with three naves of similar height. Renaissance details appear in the columns, the choir, the windows and the oculi, and the main portal is Baroque.
On the altar is the image da Virgem do Juncal, the city's patron, a medieval sculpture much venerated. The Virgin's feast is celebrated on September 8.
Around it, the streets of the center concentrate pintxos bars and shops.
