About Basílica de Begoña
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña sits on the hill of Artagan above the Casco Viejo, on the spot where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared in an oak. The present building was begun in 1519 and completed in the 17th century, in a late Gothic style with a Renaissance façade. The tower dates from the early 20th century.
The Virgin of Begoña, known as Amatxu —a term of endearment meaning ‘little mother’ in Basque— is the patron saint of Biscaia. The image is on the main altar, and the main feast usually takes place on August 15, with a pilgrimage by local residents. Basque sailors commonly made vows to the Virgin before long voyages, and the interior preserves ex-votos connected to the sea.
During the Carlist Wars of the 19th century the basilica served as a military position and was heavily damaged. From the forecourt you can see the Casco Viejo and the ria.
From the Casco Viejo you can reach it via the Calzada de Mallona, a stairway of over 300 steps that passes the old cemetery, or by the Solokoetxe elevator, near the metro station.
