About Teror

Teror lies in a green valley in the north of Gran Canaria, about 20 km from Las Palmas and at 550 meters elevation. The village grew up around the sanctuary of the Virgen del Pino, which according to tradition appeared in 1481 at the top of a pine tree, soon after the conquest of the island. The Virgin is the patron saint of Gran Canaria.

The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino, from the 18th century, has a volcanic stone façade and a yellow 16th-century tower that survived the earlier church. Inside, the image of the Virgin stands in a small chapel high on the altar, which worshippers visit via a staircase behind it.

The Calle Real de la Plaza, leading to the basilica, has Canarian houses from the 17th and 18th centuries with well-preserved pine wood balconies. The Casa-Museo de los Patronos de la Virgen shows how a wealthy family of the time lived.

On Sundays, a market around the basilica sells Teror chorizo, sweets made by the convent nuns, cheeses and handicrafts. The feast of the Virgen del Pino, in September, attracts pilgrimages from across the island.
