About Canary Islands Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo)
The Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is located in the barranco of Guiniguada, in Tafira, about 8 km from the center of Las Palmas. It opened in 1959 and is dedicated to the flora of the Canaries and Macaronesia, the Atlantic islands that include Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. The name honors José de Viera y Clavijo, an 18th-century Canarian naturalist and writer.
The garden covers about 27 hectares on a slope, with paths that descend from the top, near the road, down to the bottom of the barranco. The areas reproduce the island's environments: the dry coastal zone, with cardones, cacti resembling candelabras, and tabaibas; the dragon trees; the Canarian pinewood; the laurisilva, a humid laurel forest; and a palm grove of Canary Island palms.
There is also a succulent plant garden, ponds and an area of threatened plants, and the garden serves as a center for research and conservation.
The elevation change is significant, and the return to the top is uphill.
