About Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes are at the southern tip of Gran Canaria, about 55 km from Las Palmas, between Playa del Inglés and the Maspalomas lighthouse. They comprise roughly 400 hectares of golden sand that the wind constantly moves, creating dunes that resemble a desert by the sea. The area has been a Special Nature Reserve since 1994.

The reserve includes the Maspalomas palm grove and the lagoon La Charca, where freshwater from the ravine meets the sea and which attracts migratory birds. On the edges, the beaches of Maspalomas and El Inglés, with several kilometers of sand, are among the island’s most popular.

To protect the vegetation and dune formation, you may only walk on the marked paths that cross the reserve. The interpretation center, near the Hotel Riu, explains the origin of the dunes.

The Maspalomas lighthouse, dating from 1890, at the western tip, has a promenade with restaurants and is a meeting point at sunset.
