About Cathedral of Santa Ana
The Cathedral of Santa Ana, or Cathedral of Canaries, began to be built in 1500, shortly after the conquest of the island, and was only completed in the 19th century. The work went through several phases, and the result mixes styles: the interior is Gothic, while the main façade facing the Plaza de Santa Ana is neoclassical.
Inside, the thin, tall columns open above into ribs that resemble trunks and palm leaves, a reference to the island's landscape. The side chapels house sculptures by Canarian artists, such as José Luján Pérez.
The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, in the cloister known as the Patio de los Naranjos, houses paintings, sculptures, goldsmith work and documents. An elevator goes up to one of the towers, with a viewpoint over Vegueta, Triana, the port and the sea.
The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Canaries, which includes Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
