About Pérez Galdós House‑Museum

The Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós is on Calle Cano in the Triana neighborhood, in the house where the writer Benito Pérez Galdós was born in 1843. Galdós left Las Palmas at 19 to study in Madrid and became an acclaimed novelist, author of Fortunata y Jacinta, Misericordia and the Episodios Nacionales, a series of dozens of novels about 19th-century Spanish history.

The house is typical of Canarian architecture, with an interior courtyard, wooden galleries and plants, and was converted into a museum in 1964. The rooms recreate the writer’s life with furniture from the office and bedroom of his Madrid home, some designed by him, portraits, photographs, personal items and manuscripts.

The museum also houses a library and an archive with letters and documents, and organizes guided visits and activities about the author’s work.

Triana, the surrounding neighborhood, is the city’s shopping street, with modernist buildings and the nearby Pérez Galdós Theatre.
