About Balcón del Mediterráneo
The Balcón del Mediterráneo is the viewpoint at the tip of the Castell promontory, where Benidorm's castle stood before it was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century. Only some walls remain of the old castle; in its place a terrace with a white-and-blue balustrade was built, overlooking the sea.
From the viewpoint you can see the town's two beaches, Levante on the left and Poniente on the right, with skyscrapers around them, the island of Benidorm opposite and, on clear days, the Serra Gelada and the Ifach headland in Calp.
Just behind it is the church of San Jaime y Santa Ana, from the 18th century, with a blue-tiled dome, which houses the image of the Virgen del Sufragio, the town's patron saint, said to have been found in an abandoned boat in 1740.
Around it, the narrow streets of the old town have tapas bars and restaurants, livelier at night.
